Lucerne Old Town on foot
Lucerne Old Town lies north of the Reuss, with Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt among its useful orientation points. The station and KKL cultural and congress centre are on the opposite lakeside. Build a walk around these places rather than treating every landmark as a separate excursion. The pedestrian area is the setting for your visit; arrange luggage and vehicle access with your accommodation instead of expecting to drive into every old street.
Begin with the river and identify the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. From the south bank near the theatre, the bridge crosses towards the Peterskapelle area at Rathausquai. Once on the Old Town side, use the squares as pauses between riverside stretches. This is a suggested independent route, so choose the order that suits your arrival and any timed activity.

Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and the river crossings
Link Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt with a stretch along the Reuss, then make the Spreuer Bridge your downstream reference point. Crossing the river changes the view of the buildings and allows a loop rather than a walk that retraces every step. Keep the Jesuit Church on the south bank in mind when deciding where to cross back. The town hall, bridges and Musegg Wall also appear in the city guide’s suggested independent walk.
Choose whether the squares or the river are your priority before adding more sights. A route focused on the pedestrian centre can stay with the squares and bridges; a route including the wall needs a separate seasonal decision. For the dates and events behind these buildings, continue with Lucerne’s built history. Here the emphasis is on connecting places during a visit rather than following a chronological itinerary.

Explore the Old Town with a guide
A local guided city walk begins at the Jesuit Church; add the lake cruise only with the corresponding booked option.
Musegg Wall and seasonal tower access
The surviving Musegg Wall is about 870 metres long and has nine towers. The regular public season runs from 1 April through 1 November, daily from 08:00 to 19:00. At the November 2026 planning date, the regular winter closure has begun. Keep the wall walk as a seasonal addition instead of making tower entry the essential part of a winter day in the city.
Public access covers the wall walk and the Männli, Zyt, Wacht and Schirmer towers, with only the lower part of the Wacht tower accessible. Not all nine towers are routinely open. Access is free during the regular opening period, but there is a night closure and snow can close the route even during the season. Stairs are part of the decision: the outdoor setting does not establish a step-free route through the wall and towers.
Jesuit Church and a flexible city day
The baroque Jesuit Church stands beside the Reuss. General opening hours are 06:30 to 18:30, with a later opening at 09:30 on Monday and Thursday because of cleaning. Tourist sightseeing needs to fit around services and concerts. Plan the church as a possible interior visit within your river loop, with the option to continue along the bank if worship or an event is taking place.
If an indoor stop matters more than an extended outdoor route, compare the museum choices in Lucerne before setting out. Avoid filling a day with both the wall and a museum simply because they appear on the same city map. Choose your main visit first and use the squares and river crossings to connect it with the station.
Independent walk or a local guide
The Old Town walking option starts at the entrance to the Jesuit Church and includes a local guide and a 1.5-hour city tour. A one-hour lake cruise is included only when that additional option is booked. Treat the guided walk and the boat component as separate choices when deciding how much of the day to reserve.
The suggested places in this guide describe an independent city visit, rather than a promise that every one is a stop on that guided product. For other ways to explore on foot, compare Lucerne walking tours. If the boat component is your main interest, the boat tour comparison explains the difference between a sailing and a city-walk combination.
Questions about your visit
Is the Musegg Wall open in winter?
The regular season is 1 April through 1 November, from 08:00 to 19:00. Plan a winter visit around the Old Town squares and riverside instead of relying on tower entry.
Does the Old Town tour include a boat trip?
The guided product includes the city walk. Its one-hour cruise is an additional option that needs to be booked.
Can I drive to an Old Town accommodation?
The city map marks the Old Town as a pedestrian zone. Agree the arrival and luggage arrangements with your accommodation rather than planning general vehicle access.
